the modern loaf — dom's brain

This book is broken into 5 main chapters: the history of the bread clip, taxonomy, alternatives to clips, bread in the 14th century, and social constructs created by bread baking and how it has influenced the modern world.

color context

Each color indicated at the bottom of the entirety of the book is derived from the days of the week that bread is baked on. Blue = Monday, Green = Tuesday, Red = Thursday, White = Friday, and Yellow = Saturday.

chapter 2 (green)

All information is from an online parody organization called “HORG” which is short for: Holotypic Occlupanid Research Group. This chapter showcases the hypothetical family tree made from various clips found around the word, and breaks down different categories of the clips.

chapter 3 (red)

This chapters uses light-hearted quotes found through various sources of the internet, such as Reddit, Instagram, and X. This then, transitions into how breadclips are contributing towards a percentage sea pollution, and proposes various alternatives for the plastic.

chapter 4 (white)

Using toasted to untoasted bread to transition into the next chapter, this section highlights the role of bread within late medieval england and the social constructs between white vs. wheat bread. All while, treating images with feathered edges to gives a “fresh out the oven” look, and circular graphs to reference sourdough loaves.

chapter 5 (yellow)

This section catches up to the modern world, and how bread has played an important role in identity, gender, and religious beliefs. Touching upon topics, such as bread having a divine connotation within certain religions and how we positively unwinded from certain gender systems.
